Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi has called upon the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to address discrepancies found in two different Right to Information (RTI) responses regarding the Katchatheevu island. The issue gained significance after an RTI reply surfaced in 2024, stating that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had ceded the island to Sri Lanka. This revelation contradicted the MEA’s 2015 response, which mentioned that Katchatheevu was not acquired or ceded and lies within Sri Lankan territory.

Chaturvedi highlighted the significance of the 2015 MEA response, particularly during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s tenure as Foreign Secretary. She questioned the change in stance by the current government, especially in light of recent statements by Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Katchatheevu island has become a political flashpoint, with PM Modi’s BJP accusing the opposition Congress and DMK of neglecting Tamil Nadu’s interests. The island, originally part of a 1974 agreement, has been a source of contention between India and Sri Lanka. The BJP’s criticism of the Congress government’s decision to cede the island underscores ongoing political tensions, particularly in Tamil Nadu, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Chaturvedi’s call for clarification on the RTI responses reflects growing concerns over the handling of territorial issues and the need for transparency in government communications. The controversy surrounding Katchatheevu Island continues to fuel political debates, with parties vying for support in the region.
